Reynaldo Hinojosa Jr

beak of rooster

plucks tomato from the vine

peels away the tears of an onion

is careful to not rub the eyes of a jalapeño

stalks cilantro to cut

a bouquet

squeezes lime’s bitter crystal

a sprinkle of salt

in a bed of blush

a torrent of life

more than a garnish

more than life

a paradise of flavor

builds entire nations

quells all hunger

Bio

Reynaldo Hinojosa Jr is a Tejano-born writer and musician who examines the distinct connection between his ancestry, memory, and his shifting identity. When he isn't writing, he teaches poetry to kids for a living, is playing tug with his exuberant Corgi, Odo (aka The Constable (if you know you know)), and helping run events at his bookstore co-op.
