City of Ancient Oaks
Uvalde
City of ancient oaks
A peaceful town
Honey capital
Of the world
Old imperishable town
Near the edge of the hills
The Texas hills
Honeybees flew
That day
Buzzing around flowers
Where children died
A stranger fired
From anger
Deliberately
Killing
While others
Ran for safety
Fight or flight
Like honeybees
Children flew away
No flowers that day
Nectar of honey
Kings and queens
Of wishes
Glittering faces
Tears enough
To fill the river
Flowing through
Uvalde
From the Harvest
Memories like trees
Willows weeping
In visions of wishes
Now lonely houses
Wondering
Where they danced
Slept and dreamed
Prayers to please
Come back
Stand in shadows
Watch the living
As they go on
As they must
What’s beautiful
Grows more
Beautiful
Becomes another
Weeping tree
Stand here
Feel the breeze
It must be from
A peaceful lake
Afterlife of hope
Walk through
The tunnel
Imagining
From the harvest
New leaves
Playing music
Singing songs.
